At Chalkidiki, 40 km from Thessaloniki, on the foothill of Mt. Katsika, the ancient Kalauros the cave of Petralona was discovered in 1959. The cave was inhabited by a large group of people possible hundreds. This is manifested by the discovery of at least 3 more Archanthropus bone and skull fragments and the existence of hundreds of bone and stone tools. One of the most important discoveries was the traces of fire that were examined and dated to be a million years old

The study of human evolution generally focuses on the hominids beginning with the australopithecines, but to truly understand where humans came from it is necessary to look even earlier to the point when the human-great ape clad diverged from other primates. Ouranopithecus macedoniensis is one European Middle Miocene hominid that has been the source of much controversy. Ouranopithecus macedoniensis gets its species name from the region the fossils are found in, Macedonia of northern Greece.

Driven away by the Inquisition and the Spanish kings who at the same time saluted the ships of Columbus to the New World, the Spanish Jews, came to Thessaloniki creating the second biggest community outside their native land.
